“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.
A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.
A soul mates purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life, then introduce you to your spiritual master…”
— Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat, Pray, Love
I love this! I’ve never thought it about it this way. I dated a man once who did this for me. He once told me that all my flaws together were perfect. I will never forget him and how he touched the ache in my soul and opened me up. But you’re right…I don’t think I could have done forever but I will always treasure and love him for showing up just when I needed him.
I love that passage too. I think I’ve known a couple of people I could call soul mate in my life but the last one showed me things about myself that I avoided looking at my entire life. A life changing, wild, rip your heart open, roller coaster ride that left me a different but better person. So glad it happened and so happy I don’t have to do it again!
What a cool way of thinking about ‘soul mates’ – and definitely there have been women and men who have held up a mirror, showing me a part of myself I didn’t see…

Very interesting perspective. I love looking at things from a new direction!
The older I get, the more I believe this is true.
